One of the most impacted areas has been data centers. As AI services rapidly expanded, computational workloads grew exponentially, leading to a significant surge in power consumption and carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19635\" style=\"object-fit: cover;\" src=\"https:\/\/d18r0a86za96sg.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/27133507\/SK-hynix_Semiconductors-for-Sustainable-AI-Data-Center_Thumbnail_Image_01.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">\u25b2 Global data center power consumption is set to rise in the coming years<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/energy-and-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 Energy and AI report<\/a> by the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that data centers consumed approximately 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024. This is comparable to charging 5.5 billion electric vehicles, each with a driving range of 500 kilometers. Even more concerning is the expected surge in consumption, with electricity demand from data centers set to reach almost 945 TWh in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19652\" src=\"https:\/\/d18r0a86za96sg.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/27133514\/SK-hynix_Semiconductors-for-Sustainable-AI-Data-Center_Thumbnail_Image_02-1.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"560\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">\u25b2 Professor Byoung Hun Lee, of POSTECH\u2019s Department of Semiconductor Engineering, explaining AI server\u2019s power consumption<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This predicted growth in energy consumption can be traced to accelerated servers, commonly referred to as AI servers, which are responsible for handling AI computations. Powered by GPUs, these servers consume significantly more energy compared to general CPU-based servers. Professor Byoung Hun Lee, from POSTECH\u2019s Department of Semiconductor Engineering, explained: \u201cAI servers use 7 to 8 times more power than general servers, particularly during GPU-centric AI computation processes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the IEA\u2019s Energy and AI report, AI servers account for a substantial share of data center power consumption. By 2030, electricity consumption from AI servers alone is projected to reach 300 TWh, representing one-third of the total data center energy usage. In short, as the adoption of AI grows, the power consumption and associated carbon emissions from AI servers are expected to rise significantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"display: inline-block; max-width: 748px; width: 100%; text-align: left;\">\n<div style=\"height: 2px; background: #666666; margin-bottom: 6px;\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"sub-title\" style=\"margin: 0; line-height: 1.4;\">Integrated Solution Needed for Carbon Emissions and Climate Change<\/h3>\n<div style=\"height: 2px; background: #666666; margin-top: 6px;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Professor Sujong Jeong, Director of the Climate Tech Center at Seoul National University, warned: \u201cData centers\u2019 power consumption is projected to reach 945 TWh by 2030, equivalent to Japan\u2019s total electricity consumption today. This level of energy usage could potentially generate 2.5 billion tons of carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19617\" src=\"https:\/\/d18r0a86za96sg.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/27133521\/SK-hynix_Semiconductors-for-Sustainable-AI-Data-Center_Thumbnail_Image_03.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">\u25b2 Professor Sujong Jeong shares concerns about AI data centers\u2019 carbon emission issues<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\nProfessor Jeong added that greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants from data centers could accelerate global warming, triggering a range of negative consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Since slowing down AI progress is not an option, experts are united in calling for integrated solutions to reduce carbon emissions. According to the IEA, AI-optimized software, such as energy management systems and workload scheduling, has the potential to cut energy consumption by up to 15%. Additionally, efforts are underway to improve data center efficiency, adopt eco-friendly renewable energy, and explore new alternative energy solutions such as small modular reactors<sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup> and carbon capture utilization and storage<sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"footnote\"><sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup>Small Modular Reactor (SMR): A smaller version of traditional nuclear reactors, designed in a modular format for on-site installation. They are considered an eco-friendly energy source as they do not produce direct carbon dioxide emissions.<br \/>\n<sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup>Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS): Technologies that capture carbon dioxide emitted from power plants or industrial facilities, either storing it underground or recycling it for other purposes.<\/p>\n<p>As AI servers are the main contributors to power consumption in data centers and semiconductors are their core components, improving the performance and efficiency of semiconductors has emerged as one of the most effective solutions. This is why innovation in semiconductor technology is essential. Professor Byoung Hun Lee explained: \u201cResearch is currently underway to develop new semiconductor technologies that could reduce power consumption to less than 1\/100 of current levels. It also enhances heat dissipation capabilities through the use of new protective materials.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of SSDs, SK hynix has developed high-capacity eSSDs designed to reduce power consumption for AI data centers. The QLC<sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup>-based PS1012 can store more data in a limited space and facilitate faster transfer speeds than the previous generation, helping to reduce AI training time and lower power consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"footnote\"><sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup>Quad-level cell (QLC): A type of memory cell used in NAND flash that stores four bits of data in a single cell. NAND flash is categorized as single-level cell (SLC), multi-level cell (MLC), triple-level cell (TLC), QLC, and penta-level cell (PLC) depending on how many data bits can be stored in one cell. As the storage capacity per cell increases, more data can be stored within the same area.<\/p>\n<p>SK hynix is also developing SOCAMM<sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup>, a low-power DRAM-based memory module specialized for AI servers. With a smaller form factor compared to traditional server memory, this product is expected to contribute to improving energy efficiency in AI data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"footnote\"><sup style=\"color: #ff0000;\">* <\/sup>Small Outline Compression Attached Memory Module (SOCAMM): A low-power DRAM-based memory module specialized for AI servers, featuring a smaller form factor and greater power efficiency compared to traditional server memory modules.<\/p>\n<p>As such, it\u2019s clear that SK hynix is developing a variety of high-efficiency memory technologies to provide direct solutions to data center problems.<\/p>\n<p>The advancement of AI is expected to continue alongside developments in AI memory technology and industry investments. The <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/announcing-the-stargate-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stargate Project<\/a> in the U.S. plans to build gigawatt (GW)-scale data centers by 2029, while Taiwan has also announced <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/nvidianews.nvidia.com\/news\/foxconn-ai-factory-tsmc-taiwan-nvidia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a partnership with NVIDIA<\/a> to establish AI data centers. In South Korea, <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/eng.sk.com\/news\/sk-group-and-aws-team-up-to-build-cloud-computing-infrastructure-to-support-ai-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SK Group is collaborating with Amazon Web Services (AWS)<\/a> to construct a 100 megawatt (MW) eco-friendly AI data center in Ulsan, with plans to expand it to a 1 GW scale in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>As the number of data centers continues to grow, it is not an exaggeration to suggest that the pace of AI development hinges on the efficiency of energy management.
