We\u2019re spotlighting some of the sustainability-minded activities, endeavors and commitments advancing our goals across the world under our 2022 ECO Vision program.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 16px; line-height: 16px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"display: inline-block; max-width: 748px; width: 100%; text-align: left;\">\n<div style=\"height: 2px; background: #666666; margin-bottom: 6px;\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"sub-title\" style=\"margin: 0; line-height: 1.4;\">Our Vision for the Future: 2022 ECO Vision<\/h3>\n<div style=\"height: 2px; background: #666666; margin-top: 6px;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As demand for semiconductors grows alongside the proliferation of the 4th industry, so does scrutiny over our processes and procedures. Semiconductors require a large amount of chemicals and water for production, and if left unregulated, can contribute to pollution and waste. Our challenge as we head into the next decade is therefore two-fold: continue to meet our customers\u2019 demand, while managing and mitigating our environmental impact. This requires active efforts to reduce usage as well as ensure proper disposal of contaminants.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, as a company, we have created <a class=\"-as-ga\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.skhynix.com\/environmental-management-for-a-better-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-category=\"sk-hynix-newsroom\" data-ga-action=\"click\" data-ga-label=\"goto_https:\/\/news.skhynix.com\/environmental-management-for-a-better-world\/\">2022 ECO Vision<\/a>: a series of strategies and goals to bring us into 2022 that include the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and waste, and the investment in renewable energy and water resource management.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \uc774\ubbf8\uc9c0 \uc0ac\uc774\uc988 \uc9c0\uc815\ud574\uc11c \uc5c5\ub85c\ub4dc --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4330\" src=\"https:\/\/d18r0a86za96sg.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/27193656\/SK_hynix_2022_ECO_Vision.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">\u25b2 Figure 3. 2022 ECO Vision<\/p>\n<p>Rather than simply addressing the \u201cafter-effects\u201d of semiconductor manufacturing \u2013 like how to manage waste or contaminants after use \u2013 SK hynix reflected more deeply on the semiconductor manufacturing process itself. We asked ourselves more broadly: how can we reduce this waste from the outset? How can we restructure our processes to better reflect our respect for the environment?<\/p>\n<div style=\"height: 16px; line-height: 16px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"display: inline-block; max-width: 748px; width: 100%; text-align: left;\">\n<div style=\"height: 2px; background: #666666; margin-bottom: 6px;\"><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"sub-title\" style=\"margin: 0; line-height: 1.4;\">Celebrating Biodiversity<\/h3>\n<div style=\"height: 2px; background: #666666; margin-top: 6px;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>With the focus of this year\u2019s World Environment Day on <a class=\"-as-ga\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldenvironmentday.global\/about\/biodiversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-category=\"sk-hynix-newsroom\" data-ga-action=\"click\" data-ga-label=\"goto_https:\/\/www.worldenvironmentday.global\/about\/biodiversity\">biodiversity<\/a>, we would also like to spotlight the impact SK hynix is making in this area specifically. As a semiconductor company, one might not think that our work would touch the world of biodiversity, or the wide range of species that inhabit our land and our rivers. However, our usage of water and other chemicals can have a direct impact on these populations.<\/p>\n<p>As World Environment Day explains, \u201cbiodiversity may be seen as an intricate web, in which each part is interdependent. When one component is changed\u2013or removed\u2013the entire system is affected, and this can produce positive\u2013or negative\u2013consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At SK hynix, we recognize the impact that our manufacturing, production and distribution can have on wildlife populations around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Our integrated wastewater treatment plant, which was established in 2018 to improve the quality of discharged water, has already seen success in the waterway outside of our Icheon production site in South Korea. At our Chongqing production site in China, SK hynix has managed greenhouse gas emissions to ensure full compliance with government regulations. In 2018, we installed two additional small-size furnaces, saving 73kNm3<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span> of natural gasses and reducing emissions by 158.79 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2eq).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Reducing Waste<\/strong><br \/>\nBy 2022, we have committed to achieving 95% waste recycling across the company. Already in December 2019, SK hynix became the first Korean company to obtain the <a class=\"-as-ga\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.skhynix.com\/sk-hynix-became-the-first-korean-company-to-obtain-zero-waste-to-landfill-validation-for-all-production-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-category=\"sk-hynix-newsroom\" data-ga-action=\"click\" data-ga-label=\"goto_https:\/\/news.skhynix.com\/sk-hynix-became-the-first-korean-company-to-obtain-zero-waste-to-landfill-validation-for-all-production-sites\/\">Zero Waste to Landfill Validation for all four of its production sites<\/a>, certified by Underwriters Laboratories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We are committed to minimizing waste production through maximizing the recycling of resources as part of our effort to reduce our environmental impact. It is our vision to turn \u201cwaste until resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Investing in Renewable Energy<\/strong><br \/>\nAt our Icheon production site, SK hynix installed two small hydro-generators in 2018 that use the water discharged from the wastewater treatment plant to generate electricity for partial lighting of our wastewater treatment plants. Since then, we have achieved success by reducing the total amount of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span>, total nitrogen (T-N)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span>, total phosphorus (T-P)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">*<\/span> by between 15-40% compared to 2017.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \uc774\ubbf8\uc9c0 \uc0ac\uc774\uc988 \uc9c0\uc815\ud574\uc11c \uc5c5\ub85c\ub4dc --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4330\" src=\"https:\/\/d18r0a86za96sg.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/27193731\/Wastewater_Treatment_Plant.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">\u25b2 Figure 6. And while we have certainly come a long way, we know that there is always more work to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Our hope is that the 2022 ECO Vision initiative will serve as a compass for environmental affairs in the years to come and contribute to real change and impact across our business and the local communities we serve.
