Hyundai Boosts Industrial/Educational Cooperation with Local Universities

– Hyundai Electronics is intensifying collaboration with local Korean universities in order to increase support for talented students and technology-related projects

Seoul, Korea, October 6, 2000 – Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. is intensifying collaboration with local Korean universities in order to increase support for talented students and technology-related projects. Mr. Sang-Ho Park, president of the Semiconductor business unit of Hyundai Electronics Industries, and Mr. Jang Sang, president of Ehwa Woman’s University, signed a contract yesterday. The terms of the agreement include the following: A joint Ehwa/Hyundai semiconductor research center will be established Ehwa will develop next-generation semiconductor technology Over the next five years, Hyundai will recruit 30 graduates with advanced degrees from Ehwa’s Information Technology department Hyundai researchers will lecture at Ehwa Professors from the joint research center will conduct a seminar at Hyundai Ehwa graduate school students will serve internships at Hyundai Over the next three years, Hyundai will fund scholarships totaling 900 million won (US $750,000) for the graduate school of Ehwa, in addition to providing financial support for select graduate school students on a monthly basis. Hyundai will also provide financial support for the joint research center and its projects. Prior to establishing this agreement with Ehwa Woman’s University, Hyundai donated nine pieces of core semiconductor manufacturing equipment to the Seoul National University last March. Hyundai also signed a contract last month to provide donated equipment and financial support for three years to the Pohang University of Science and Technology. In addition, this year Hyundai has extended its Technical Resources Council, which formerly operated only in the Semiconductor business unit, to all business units. The council promotes joint projects with universities and oversees the effective management of research within those programs. The objectives of the council are: recruiting and securing qualified human resources, fostering and rewarding core researchers, and reinforcing the power of R&D staffs and their technologies. Through consistent industrial/educational cooperation with top-ranking Korean universities, Hyundai expects to facilitate the stable recruitment of superior talent and brain power for all of its various business units
