hynix Semiconductor Inc. (formerly Hyundai Electronics, www.hynix.com ) announced that it has secured the contract on the sale of its water treatment facility to Vivendi Water, S.A., the French company specializing in water, wastewater, solid and hazardous waste treatment in an agreement signed yesterday. Mr. Soo Choi, vice president of the Business Development Strategic Planning Team at hynix and Mr. Regis Calmels, regional director of Vivendi Water in Asia, signed the agreement at a ceremony held at the Chosun Hotel on March 30th. With a value of 207.7 billion won (approximately US$160 million, 1$=1298 won), the contract includes pre-treated and deionized water treatment facilities at hynix headquarters in Ichon as well as deionized water and wastewater treatment for hynix facilities located in Cheong-ju and Gumi. Based on a separate agreement, hynix will continue to use these facilities, with Vivendi providing the water treatment service to hynix over the next 12 years. With service expiration at the end of this period, Vivendi will return the facilities to hynix without charge. “We anticipate that this specialized water treatment operation by a company such as Vivendi will contribute to more efficient facility management and a cost savings for us”, said a hynix official. Vivendi Water, S.A. is the leading expert in providing environmental services to industry, municipalities and governmental clients, with annual sales of 14 trillion won (approximately US$ 11 billion) and a staff of 70,000 in 100 countries. The French-based company is actively seeking to acquire large-scale wastewater treatment facilities in Korea. The sales deal, which is in compliance with hynix’s recapitalization program announced in January, is expected to improve the financial structure and ease the burden of maturing debt. The sales total represents 56 percent of the target amount of 400 billion won (approximately US$ 308 million) that hynix proposes to raise for the first half of 2001. Since hynix announced the outline for their capital restructure this year, the company has raised funds worth 222.5 billion (approximately US$ 171 million) won by selling the basketball team (7.2 billion won), selling stakes in Hyundai Logistics Co., Ltd. (75.6 billion won) and the water treatment facilities (207.7 billion won). In addition, hynix spun off their satellite service and customer service operations this year. The company will continue to spin off its non-core businesses, with the exception of semiconductor manufacturing and sales, in an effort to refocus its business and strengthen market confidence.
