hynix Semiconductor Inc.(hynix, www.hynix.com) yesterday announced that its 288 Megabit (Mb) RambusR DRAM (RDRAMR) has received validation from Rambus Inc.. The component features 800 MHz in 288Mb density with a 2.5-volt power supply and up to 1.6 Gigabytes (GB/s) data transmission speed, which fully meets Rambus Inc.’s design standard. This validation further solidifies hynix’s presence in the high-speed main memory market and exemplifies hynix’s commitment to continue to develop and produce the latest memory components and modules to fully support its customer’s needs for advanced memory products. hynix will manufacture these RDRAM devices in their state-of-the-art facilities in Cheongju, Korea. The volume production for these newly validated devices will be decided based on customer demand. Recognized as the leader in DDR memory, this validation reflects hynix’s ready position to provide Rambus products as well as DDR memory, to a constantly changing market environment. Farhad Tabrizi, vice president of hynix worldwide memory marketing, stated, “We’re pleased to have the 288Mb RDRAM validation from Rambus. With this validation of the 800 MHz part, the highest speed Rambus offered today, hynix is well positioned to ensure that we are platform ready, regardless of the DRAM technology, SDR, DDR, or RDRAM. We are committed to satisfy our customer’s needs in a timely and cost-effective manner.” hynix’s 288 Mb RDRAM is fabricated using a proven 0.18 micron process technology. Applications for RDRAMs are workstations, network systems and high-end PCs that require high-speed, high-bandwidth memories. hynix plans to begin mass production of the 288Mb RDRAM 2nd quarter of this year and the part will be available in both Rambus Inline Memory Modules (RIMMR) and micro ball grid array (BGA) package types.
