Seoul, Korea, October 30, 2000 – Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. (HEI) announced yesterday that it will supply CDMA WLL (Code Division Multiple Access Wireless Local Loop) equipment and handsets to India. The equipment and handsets are valued at US$120 million. Hyundai recently acquired an approval certificate for its Code Division Multiple Access Wireless Local Loop (CDMA WLL) technology from the government of India. Now the company is to provide 150,000 lines of CDMA WLL equipment to Department of Telecommunications Services (DTS), the state-run telecommunications operator in India. DTS initiated the CDMA WLL equipment bidding in an effort to modernize the telecommunication networks of remote districts and out-lying regions of India. Hyundai plans to produce the equipment and handsets in India, thus securing its entry into the nation’s telecommunications market. Hyundai passed the field trial test on its CDMA WLL system and handsets in Calcutta this past September and intends to implement them in remote areas of India by early 2001. Since the WLL system is both cost effective and easily deployed, the Indian government hopes to establish two million lines of WLL service by 2001 with an additional three million lines by 2002, thus creating a telecommunications infrastructure in otherwise remote regions. To meet the Indian government’s ambitious plan, HEI will supply more than 1.5 million lines of CDMA WLL equipment by 2002. As the primary supplier of WLL equipment in India, Hyundai will also be set to enter the region’s next generation IMT-2000 market. HEI is poised to enter the Brazilian and Chinese WLL markets as well, both recently having demonstrated similarly rapid growth. Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. (HEI) is an industry leader in the development, sales, marketing, and distribution of high-quality Semiconductors, Telecommunications, and Liquid Crystal Displays. Based in Korea, HEI maintains development, manufacturing, sales, and marketing facilities strategically located worldwide.
