SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 12, 2001

Hyundai Electronics Industries (HEI) today announced that its 128MB and 256MB DDR SDRAM unbuffered DIMM modules have received validation from AMD and VIA Technologies, Inc. These modules meet JEDEC-standard DDR266 or PC2100. Both companies now have DDR chipsets, which will be used to produce next-generation PCs. This validation positions Hyundai as a leader in the DDR synchronous main memory market, and points to an accelerating adoption of this cutting-edge, cost-competitive memory architecture by leading chip companies. Commenting on the validation, Farhad Tabrizi, vice president, worldwide memory marketing, noted his company’s early leadership in the DDR arena, “HEI produced the world’s first 64MB DDR synchronous DRAM device in 1999, and, with its 90 percent share of the 64MB DDR graphic memory market, has long been a technology leader in this arena. The range of DDR products, beginning with graphic memory, is now extending to a wide variety of applications such as PCs, high-end servers, network equipment, printers and digital consumer devices. These high-performance memory devices will represent 15 percent of the overall DRAM market this year, a figure that is projected to grow to more than 40 percent next year. A large portion of this increase will likely occur in the second half of 2001, when DDR PC becomes mainstream. DDR doubles system memory performance while reducing system power by about 40 percent.” The validation process is designed for DRAM manufacturers and chipset customers to verify that new DDR devices are compliant with JEDEC standards and with critical DDR specifications. The validation-testing program consists of device-level, module-level and system-level testing. This includes device-level characterization, functional and parametric module testing and a comprehensive system-level testing under various temperatures and voltages.
